Christmas Day
Inspired by my article on Christmas day portrait tips I decided that I would do my own Christmas day family portraits and post them up for you on camera advice. My brothers brother-in-law (bit of a mouthful, I know!) invited our whole family for an amazing Christmas day meal. I therefore decided that I would take some pictures to remember the day by.
Preparation
I decided to go for a relaxed reportage style and I wanted to use only natural light. I took a flash with me just in case but didn’t want to use it if I could get away without it. I used a Canon 5D which can handle low light and set it to 1600 ASA/ISO and stuck with my 24-70mm 2.8 zoom. I had already told everybody I was going to take pictures, which they didn’t seem too concerned about, and started shooting soon after I arrived. It was great, everybody seemed so wrapped up (no pun intended) with their presents that I could happily snap away.
Shooting
There was just about enough light to shoot without flash and it was nice diffused light so no hard shadows. Apart from the Christmas tree there weren’t any Christmas decorations so I decided to take a couple of mood shoots to go with the portraits to tell the christmas lunch story.
I kept my camera by side throughout lunch and took a few shots between courses, trying not to overdo it. This is not always easy when you start getting stuck into shooting.
Results
At the end of the day I felt that I had some really nice relaxed portraits of my friends and family and some great shots to remember the day by.
I put a few up on Facebook for everybody to see and will be making an album to upload to Flickr.
Upload some of your Christmas Portraits.
If you’d like to show some of your Christmas shots feel free to upload them onto my site and I will display them in a blog. Size them so they are no more than 500 pixels in hight or width and save them for the web as jpgs. I look forward to seeing them.
