Memory Cards
A digital camera uses a memory card instead of film to store your photographs. Cameras tend come with inadequately sized memory cards so it is worth buying another with a larger storage capacity. You do not want to run out of space on your card in the middle of your jungle safari. In fact you may want to buy two just to be on the safe side.
There are various different types of memory card in different gigabyte sizes, so make sure you buy the right one and the right size for your camera.
Compact flash I and II. These are the largest cards and Canon, Nikon, Olympus and Fuji support them. They go from around 1 Gigabyte to 16 Gigabytes.
Memory Stick. These work only with Sony products
Secure Digital (SD) and Multimedia Cards. These are used by wide range of manufacturers, including: Nikon, Canon, Fuji, Epson, HP, Kodak, Leica, Konica Minolta and Samsung. These cards also feature data security.
XD Cards. These are small with a large capacity. Supported by Olympus and Fujifilm.
The correct amount of storage capacity will depend on the size of files your camera writes and the resolution that you have it set to. Usually a 2/4 gigabyte card will be fine for a DSLR and a 1 gig card will be fine for a Compact.
They also come in different speeds. The faster the speed the faster the camera will write the files onto the card.

Batteries
Most digital cameras come with a rechargeable lithium-ion battery. You should definitely buy a spare battery and carry it around with your camera. If you run out of battery power your camera will not work! It is worth checking out how long these batteries retain their charge before you buy the camera. Some are better than others.
Some cameras still take standard alkaline batteries. In this case you will have to keep buying new batteries, which is more expensive than the recharging option. The advantage is you can buy these batteries almost anywhere.

Case or camera bag
It’s annoying that when you buy a camera that it does not come with cases, because you need one. I would say however much money you have spent on your new camera it is definitely worth buying a case or bag in which to protect it. There is a multitude of different cases and bags on the market. I would go for the least expensive looking one possible that will do the job. You want to protect your gear but I think it’s best not to advertise the fact that you’re carrying around an expensive piece of kit.
