The advantages of shooting digitally are:

Save Money

The initial outlay for a digital camera is more than for a film camera but in the long run you save because you don’t have to buy film and get it processed. Instead of film you use a memory card which you can reuse.

Shoot and Delete

You can shoot as many shots as you like and you can see them straight away on the screen of your camera. If you don’t like them you can delete them. so no wasted prints.

Versatile

If you have access to a computer you can maniputate the images, print them at home, save them on your computer and also upload them onto social networking sites or photo sharing sites where you can share them with your friends. Don’t worry if you don’t have a computer because you can get your images printed out at a photo lab and get them burned on to a disc to store them.

Compact or Digital Single Lens Reflex

So, if going digital appeals to you ,then you need to decide what type of camera you want to buy. To help you do this, start by asking yourself what type of pictures are you going to take?

Compact?

Are you going to use it for the occasional holiday snap or at a friend’s party? Do you want it to be fully automatic so you don’t have to know anything about photography? Do you want it to be small and convenient to carry around? If so you almost certainly want a compact camera. In which case move onto the section that tells you all about compact cameras.

DSLR?

If, on the other hand, you are interested in developing your photography skills, want creative control over your pictures, want high end picture quality and don’t mind carrying around heavy equipment then you are probably looking for a digital SLR. If so take a look at the section on DSLRs.
